Due to a large number of Venezuelan refugees, Ecuador’s authorities extended the emergency situation in three provinces until February 28. This was reported by Deputy Foreign Affairs and Migration Minister Santiago Chavez.

Over the past four years, Ecuador has excepted more than 1.3 million migrants and about 250 thousand remained in the country. Only in January 2019, the number of people arriving was 36 thousand and 3.5 thousand respectively. According to the migration services, about 1 thousand people arrive in the country every day.

The emergency mode allows the authorities of Ecuador to allocate funds in a simplified manner thus assisting foreigners, providing them with housing and medical care. A six-fold extension of the emergency situation is linked with local legislation, which does not allow to impose it for more than 1 month.

This number of migrants from Venezuela is related to the fact that in the past few years the country has been suffering a severe economic and social crisis, along with hyperinflation. However, the Venezuelan government does not recognize the existing crisis.
