Juris Puce, Latvia’s Minister of Environmental Protection and Regional Development urged the mayor of Riga Nils Ušakovs to resign due to a corruption scandal over a public transportation and infrastructure company Rigas Satiksme.

The employees of the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau of Latvia have already carried out searches in the mayor’s office and his private residence. However, no official charges have been pressed against Ushakov so far. He also hasn’t been put under investigation. Nil Ushakov himself denies his involvement in any illegal activity and expresses his intention to remain the mayor of the city.

In an interview with the Latvian television Puce, apart from recommending Ushakov to resign, said, “If I were Ushakov, I wouldn’t have exaggerated my personal role in the world’s history. The Riga’s Duma existed long before Ushakov became mayor and will continue to exist after he leaves.” Apart from this, he criticizes the mayor for the current situation in the city, which creates serious doubts on whether the government can be trusted.

It should be noted that it is Yuris Puce who’s dealing with the issue of Riga’s Duma dissolution and who should assess the situation and present his solution. This was announced on Wednesday, January 30, by the Prime Minister of Latvia, Krisjanis Karins.
